Hammer toe

HammertoeHammer toe is a secondary problem originating from fallen cross arches. The toes start to curl and get pulled backwards, as the collapsed or pushed out metatarsal bones pull the tendons and ligaments, and causes them to get shorter and tighter. Because of this the toes have higher pressure.

HammertoeHammer toes may occur in any toe, except the big toe. There is often discomfort at the top part of the toe that is rubbing against the shoe. Movement is very limited and can be extremely painful. This sometimes causes foot movement to become restricted leading to extra stress at the ball-of-the-foot, and possibly causing pain, numbness and the development of corns and calluses.

Treatment: As the main cause of hammer toes is due to a fallen cross arch, the restorative process works in a similar way. The built in modules in the Pedikom restorative orthotics will force the metatarsal bones into forming an arch. As the arch is rebuilt relief is provided to the tight ligaments and muscles, which have caused the hammer toe. With this process the hammer toes will have no more reason to curl up and the pressure around this area will be relieved. Over time, the hammer toes may eventually straighten out.
