Ingrown toenails
Due to either a foot deformity, abnormality of the nail, from wearing ill fitting shoes, or simply because of improper toenail cutting, the sharp edge of the nail becomes embedded in the flesh, causing inflammation.
The symptoms of severely ingrown toenails are typically a painful, infected growth in the tissue around the nail. At this stage surgical excision of the edge of the nail is required.
Treatment: The use of Pedikom restorative orthotics can help to prevent ingrown toenails, by ensuring the correct position of the toes through the forming of the cross arches. Teaching patients how to cut toenails correctly is also very important.
