Elderly foot care

Just as every other part in our body, our feet grow older too. This can naturally lead to many different types of foot problem, such as: loss of joint mobility; the fat-pads under the-ball-of-the -foot slowly disappearing, the circulation in the feet slowing down and so on.

Healing can take longer as the skin loses its elasticity. Furthermore, wear and tear to the joints over the years may cause various degrees of arthritis.

However, it is never too late for us to begin paying more attention to our feet and to stop taking them for granted.

Elderly patients should try to keep their feet warm and move your toes around when possible. They should not wear socks that are too tight as this can slow down the circulation in the feet or bring about toe cramps.

Another important consideration is to ensure a good fitting, comfortable shoe that provides enough support even around the ankles. However, care should be taken not to tie the shoes too firmly, since this can also restrict circulation in the feet.

Soft leather shoes are the best as they allow the feet to breathe and are easy to clean. They also mould around the feet providing even more comfortable after a few uses. The best time to buy shoes is the afternoon, because if the feet have a tendency to swell during the day, it would clearly be better to buy shoes when the feet are swollen, rather than risk the chance that the shoes will be too tight.

The Pedikom restorative orthotics, manufactured in either Polifoam or leather can provide an excellent support to people with severe foot problems that have developed due to old age. The Pedikom orthotics can even stop many problems from getting worse and provide support and comfort to the feet at the same time.
